Engagement rate formulas
| Formula | Calculation | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| By followers | Interactions ÷ followers × 100 | Comparing accounts, creator vetting |
| By reach | Interactions ÷ reach × 100 | Judging a post on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn |
| By views | Interactions ÷ views × 100 | TikTok, YouTube, Reels |
Interactions are the sum of likes, comments, shares and saves. For several posts, the total is divided by the number of posts first, so you get the average rate per post.
How to use the calculator
- Choose the platform and what to measure against: followers, reach or views.
- Enter the audience number and the post’s likes, comments, shares and saves. Leave a field at zero if the platform doesn’t show it.
- For an average, add up the interactions of several posts and enter how many posts that covers.
- Read the rating, then look at the extra numbers: a high share of saves and shares usually means content people value.
Rough benchmarks by platform
These bands are rules of thumb used across the industry, not official figures. Rates vary a lot with account size, niche and format, and smaller accounts usually score higher.

How to raise your engagement rate
- Ask one specific question in the caption. Vague “thoughts?” prompts get far fewer replies.
- Reply to comments in the first hour. Conversations tell the algorithm the post is worth showing.
- Make posts worth saving: checklists, step-by-step carousels, templates.
- Check your caption opening with the character counter so the hook shows before “more”.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate engagement rate?
Add up the interactions on a post (likes, comments, shares and saves), divide by the audience you measure against and multiply by 100. The audience can be your follower count, the post’s reach, or its views.
Which formula should I use?
Use engagement by followers to compare accounts with each other, for example when a brand checks a creator. Use engagement by reach or by views to judge how good a post was with the people who actually saw it. TikTok and YouTube are usually measured by views.
What is a good engagement rate?
It depends on the platform and the account size, and smaller accounts usually score higher. As a rough guide, by followers on Instagram 1 to 3% is average and above 3% is strong. On TikTok, by views, 4 to 8% is average and above 8% is strong. Use the rating as a starting point, not a verdict.
Should I count saves and shares?
Yes, when you have them. Saves and shares show stronger interest than likes and the algorithms weigh them heavily. Leave a field at zero if a platform doesn’t show it.
Can I calculate the average over several posts?
Yes. Enter the total likes, comments, shares and saves of several posts, and the number of posts. The calculator divides by the number of posts to give the average engagement rate per post.
Is my data stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is saved or sent.
