- Check the platform limits, then copy the clean list.
Hashtag limits and best practice by platform
| Platform | Limit | What works |
|---|---|---|
| 5 per post on most accounts (rolled out from Dec 2025) | 3 to 5 specific tags | |
| TikTok | No fixed limit, counts toward the caption | 3 to 5 relevant tags |
| YouTube | All ignored above 60 per video | 3 tags, shown above the title |
| X | No fixed limit, counts toward 280 characters | 1 or 2 |
| No fixed limit | 3 to 5 at the end of the post | |
| Up to 20, de-emphasised | Keywords in the description instead |
What breaks a hashtag
- Spaces:
#travel tipsonly tags “travel”. Use#TravelTips. - Punctuation: commas, dots, apostrophes and hyphens end the tag.
- Starting with a number only, like
#2026, which some apps don’t link.
Checking the whole caption’s length? Use the character counter.

Frequently asked questions
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Instagram began limiting posts to 5 hashtags in December 2025, rolling it out gradually; some older accounts may still accept up to 30. The counter warns you above 5.
How many hashtags should I use on TikTok and YouTube?
TikTok has no hard hashtag limit beyond the caption length, but 3 to 5 relevant hashtags work best. On YouTube, the first 3 hashtags in the description appear above the title, and YouTube ignores all hashtags on a video that has more than 60.
What does the formatter fix?
It adds missing # signs, removes spaces and punctuation that break a hashtag, removes duplicates regardless of capitals, and lets you choose spaces, new lines or commas between hashtags.
Can I paste a whole caption?
Yes. The tool finds every hashtag in the text, counts them and lists them. Turn on “Words to hashtags” instead if you paste a plain list of keywords.
Do capital letters matter in hashtags?
Not for search: #TravelTips and #traveltips are the same tag. Capitals do make hashtags easier to read, especially for screen readers, so the “CamelCase” option is a good choice.
Is my text stored?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is saved.
