Why a normal space doesn’t work

Most apps trim spaces from the start and end of names and messages, and treat a field with only spaces as empty. Invisible characters are classed as letters or symbols, not as whitespace, so they survive the clean-up while still showing nothing.

Frequently asked questions

What is an invisible character?

It is a real Unicode character that takes up space, or no space, but shows nothing on screen. Because apps see it as text, you can use it where a field can’t be left empty, or to keep spacing that would otherwise be removed.

Which invisible character should I use?

The Hangul filler (U+3164) is the most widely accepted for blank names and messages. The Braille blank (U+2800) is the best choice for empty lines in Instagram and TikTok captions. Zero-width space is useful between letters, but many apps strip it out.

Can I have a blank name on Instagram, TikTok or in games?

Many apps accept a name made of a Hangul filler, but some reject it or replace it. If one character doesn’t work, try another from the list. Usernames (the @handle) usually only allow letters, numbers and a few symbols.

How do I send an empty message on WhatsApp?

Copy the Hangul filler or the Braille blank and send it as the message. It arrives as a message that looks empty.

How do I copy several blank characters?

Use the repeat box: choose a character and how many times to repeat it, then copy. This is handy for indenting text or making a wider blank space.

Is this safe to use?

Yes. These are standard Unicode characters. Use them for formatting and fun, not to impersonate someone or hide links, which platforms treat as spam.
