How to use the online teleprompter

  1. Paste your script. It is saved in this browser only, so you can come back to it later.
  2. Set the speed in words per minute. The reading time updates as you type, so you know how long the take will be.
  3. Choose a text size you can read from where you sit, and narrow the lines so your eyes move less.
  4. Press Start. After the countdown the script scrolls past the reading line. Press Space to pause and the arrow keys to adjust.

Tips for reading naturally on camera

  • Put the text right under your webcam. The closer the words are to the lens, the more it looks like eye contact.
  • Keep lines short. A line width of 60 to 80 percent stops your eyes from sweeping across the screen.
  • Write the way you speak. Contractions and short sentences sound less like reading.
  • Add a blank line where you want to pause. It gives you a visual cue to breathe.
  • Do a test take, then set the speed to match your natural pace rather than chasing the text.

Not sure how long your script is? The words to minutes calculator estimates speaking time before you record.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use a teleprompter on my laptop?

Paste your script, set your speed and press Start. Place the browser window as close to your webcam as possible, ideally right under it, so your eyes stay near the lens while you read.

What speed should I set?

Most people read naturally on camera at 130 to 150 words per minute. Start at 140 and adjust during a test take with the arrow keys. The total time shown before you start tells you how long the take will last.

What is mirror mode?

Mirror mode flips the text horizontally so it reads correctly when reflected in the glass of a hardware teleprompter or beam-splitter rig. You can also flip it vertically for rigs that need it.

Can I use it on a phone or tablet?

Yes. It works in any modern browser. On a phone, rotate to landscape for longer lines, or use a tablet behind your camera.

Is my script saved?

Your script is saved only in this browser so it’s still there next time. It is never uploaded. Use Clear to remove it.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Space starts and pauses, the up and down arrows change speed, the left and right arrows jump back or forward, and Escape leaves full screen.
