How to use the character counter

    1. Type or paste your caption. Every count updates as you write.
    2. Scan the platform cards. Green is within the limit, orange is close and red is over.
    3. Pick a platform in the preview to see exactly what shows before “more”, then rewrite your opening line until it stands on its own.

Figures as of October 2026. Platforms test changes on some accounts first, so a limit can differ slightly on yours.

How to write captions that survive the cut-off

    • Lead with the payoff or the question. The first line is all most people read.
    • Move hashtags to the end, where they don’t push your message below the fold.
    • Use line breaks sparingly in the opening. On LinkedIn and Instagram each one costs visible space.
    • Put links in the first comment or your bio when the platform hides them in captions.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the Instagram caption limit?

2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji and hashtags. Only the first 125 or so characters show in the feed before “more”, so the opening line does most of the work.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Instagram began limiting posts to 5 hashtags in December 2025, rolling the change out gradually. Some older accounts may still allow up to 30. The counter warns you above 5.

How long can a TikTok caption be?

Up to about 4,000 characters in the TikTok app. Scheduling tools that post through TikTok’s API are usually limited to 2,200, so stay under that if you schedule.

Why does X count my emoji as two characters?

X weights characters: most Latin letters count as one, while emoji and many characters from Chinese, Japanese and Korean count as two. Every link counts as 23 characters, whatever its real length. The X count here follows those rules.

Where does LinkedIn cut off a post?

Around 210 characters on desktop and 140 on mobile, before the “…see more” link. Line breaks use up that space faster, so put your hook on the first line.

    Is my text saved anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored.
