    Frequently asked questions

    What is timecode?

Timecode labels every frame of a video as hours:minutes:seconds:frames, for example 01:02:03:12. Editors, subtitle files and post-production teams use it to point to an exact frame.

    What is drop-frame timecode?

At 29.97 and 59.94 fps, video runs slightly slower than the timecode count. Drop-frame timecode skips frame numbers 00 and 01 (or 00 to 03 at 59.94) at the start of each minute, except every tenth minute, so the timecode stays in sync with the clock. It is written with a semicolon: 00:10:00;00.

How do I convert frames to timecode?

Pick the frame rate, choose Frames as the input and type the frame count. The timecode, real time in seconds and the equivalent at other settings appear immediately.

Why does 23.976 fps not match real time?

23.976 is 24 × 1000 ÷ 1001. Timecode counts 24 frames per second, so one hour of timecode lasts 1 hour and 3.6 seconds of real time. The calculator shows both.

Can I calculate the duration between two timecodes?

Yes. Fill in the start and end timecodes in the duration section to get the length in timecode, frames and seconds.

    Is anything sent online?

No. All calculations happen in your browser.
